comments on others work

I have looked at and tested my class mates work which they have produced in flash. I thought it was well thought of as it can be an everyday situation and was quite interesting and kept me looking at it. I really liked the use of colours in which they used in there comic as it was black and white with only a few other colours whereas everything else was black or white. The interactive comic they they produced had an everyday storyline with a twist to it. Because of this i think that it was well thought through and designed, this is what kept me watching. The story also had a lot of panning and zooming involved as well as moving images which was also another good point as this made it different than other stories which would just involve one fixed image after another.

Evaluation

For my project i had to produce a flash animation. The aim was to think of a story and base it upon that story. I made it in flash on the iphone setting. I started off by doing research into interactive comics and digital techniques. I found out many pieces of information which would help me with my project. I found out that making an interactive can be really simple yet really effective like a comic that i researched called 'Dead On Arrival'. This interactive comic was made from photographs and speech bubbles. It was a black and white comic but also had red as well. This made it different as it was not just the normal black and white. I also liked the fact you can chose options half way through.

After looking at several comics i decided to mainly pictures for mine and as little text possible as i found that reading whilst i was getting into the story was just distracting. I also wanted to make it as bright and colourful as possible as then it would stand out more and not have a strict rule on colour co-ordination. I started experimenting by making a few story boards and made notes on how i would do different parts to make it. I then went on to seeing how i would make a specific picture to into my animation in photoshop and see if i could make it. I developed my ideas on paper at first then started putting them into the computer as pictures to show what was happening in a certain scene. I had an idea of making every picture i used a different hue and saturation so that no image that i use would be the correct colour but then I tried it in photoshop and soon realised that i would not work as in some cases i couldn't work out what some objects were.

My final animation turned out about as good as i thought it would. It all went to plan and how i wanted it and at some stages i thought it might be a bit hard hard to make specific scene i made it well to the best of my ability. The one thing i would change is that i would add a new scene at the start so it makes the story a little bit more understanding. I enjoyed this project as in the past i have barely used flash but now i am confident to use it a bit more as i have learned the basics.

My Flash Story In Progress

I started off by opening flash and chose the iphone setting. I then made my stage landscape by going to layer properties and swapping the width and height measurements around. I then opened photoshop and created a beginning start screen or a cover for the story. I made it by opening a picture of a Welcome to Devon sign and used the clone tool to get rid of the word Devon. i then used the text tool and typed The South West as my animation is about South West bmxing. I then imported this image to my stage in flash and put this as my first key frame. I then made a button to be used through out my animation and turned it into a movie clip so it can be used more than once. i then placed my button on the bottom right hand side of my start picture.

After making my start picture and button I then went on to making my bmxer do the first jump of the story. I done this by opening a picture of a bmxer in photoshop and cropped it down to what i want an then got rid of the background using the magic wand tool and then saved it as a PNG format so that when i open it in flash the unwanted background will not reappear. I then placed a picture of the first jump into my animation. i then, on a new layer, placed the image of my bmxer. I then made my background stay there for a while whilst the bmxer is on the stage as well by inserting a new key frame further on in the time line. I then made a line for the bmxer to follow by using the line tool and then modified it by using the selection and sub selection tools. i then made my bmxer follow this line by using a guide tween. By the end of this scene it looked like that the bmxer was riding on the ramps in the background. I also added my button which i previously made at into the end of the scene. I then placed a new frame here on a new layer and made it stop by using code snippets and action script. I then made it so if the button was pressed it would take you to the next scene. This also involved code snippets and action script.

I then went on to making my second scene which was made by using the same method as the the previous one. The only difference in this one was i had a different background image and made the bmxer rider over them by using a classic tween rather than a guide tween. This took a little longer but i done this because i wanted to make him do a back flip in this scene. i then placed my button here again and made it stop here until it was pressed.

I then made my third scene which also used the same method as the first bmx scene i made but this one had another different background. I then added the frame with code snippets and action script to make it stop. I also the added my button which took it on to the next scene.

After those three scenes i decided to make the next one different. In this scene i made the bmxer manual across a surface in which he ended up on the other side of the screen. In this scene i started off by making an image larger in width in photoshop. I then placed this onto my stage as the new background for my new scene. I then made a new key frame further down the time line and on this key frame i moved the background image to the other side of the stage. i then added a classic tween. Once that was complete the outcome was a moving background. I the placed the bmxer onto the stage on a new layer and rotated him so he was in a manual stance. I then made a new key frame, in-line with the end of this moving background, and then moved the bmxer to the right hand side of the screen. I then put a classic tween onto it. this made him move from right to left, as the background was moving left to right. I then added the button and the stop frame.

I then went on to making my next scene which was my bmx character riding across and down a hill. Again i began this scene by placing a picture as a background onto the stage and then placed a key frame further along the time line. After this i added the bmxer on to the stage on a new layer. I then placed the bmxer at the top of the hill and made a new key frame further along. I then added four more key frames along the time line and moved the bmxer across each time until he was at the other side of the stage. I the added a classic tween between all of the key frames. the outcome was the bmxer moved across the hill, down and then across the hill half way down. Also on the last key frame I made it further away from the rest so he moved slower towards the end as if he were riding over and rough, rocky surface.

After all of this i got a picture of the bmx which he is riding and opened it up in photoshop. i then cropped it so it was just the back wheel and part of the back end of the frame and seat visible. Then i got rid of the background and saved it as a PNG format so i could open it in flash without the background. I then made three more copies of the back wheel, in photoshop, and rotated it 90 degrees each time. i then copied my image of the back  of the back of the bmx 3 times and put the wheels onto them. I also the saved these ans a PNG and opened the up in my library in flash. I then got a picture which i made very wide in photoshop and added this to my stage. i then made this move from left to right by adding a key frame quite a way down the time line. I then added a classic tween after moving it to the left hand side of the screen on the last frame. I then got the first image of the back of the bmx and placed it on the bottom right hand corner of the stage. On the next frame i added the second in the same place and the done the same with the third and fourth. i then copied and pasted these four frames on after another until these frames were in line with the end of my backgrounds last frame. I then made an image in photoshop by using the custom shape tool to make a breaking or and explosion shape i then put two more on top. With this image i opened it in flash and put on the last 10 frames of the back of the bmx. I placed the explosion image over part of the chain in each frame. The end result of this scene was a zoomed in close up of the back wheel are as the bmx was riding across a dirt path and towards the end of the the  scene the an explosion appeared around the chain as if it just snapped. I then placed a key frame above the end of this scene and used the action script and code snippets to make it stop. I then added my button in and used the same techniques so when it was pressed it would continue with the story.

Then for my next scene i decided to put a close up of the broken chain the the audience would know what the explosion was about. I made this broken chain image in photoshop by using the quick selection tool and the free transform tool. I made the chain looked snapped by duplicating a layer of just the chain and cut bits off and moved them around. I then placed this image onto my stage in flash after the previous scene and made it stay there for a couple of seconds. I then made my button appear so you can continue with the story.

Again to start off a new scene i got a background image placed and made it last for a certain amount of time by adding a key frame further down the time line. I then placed the image of the bmxer at the beginning of the background. I then placed a key frame about 7 frames across and moved the bmxer to the top of the ramp. I then done this again across the time line after the previous but moved the bmx into a different place each time. With this done i made him go up the ramp and do half a back flip. After this i made him come off of his bmx in mid-air  because his chain snapped and put him off balance. I done this by placing an image of just the bmx after the last frame and then an image if just the guy as well, which i edited in photoshop so i was left with just the man.I then moved these two images about whilst adding key frames across the time line. i then added a classic tween between all of the key frames in this scene. With the image of the bmx in this scene, I made it complete the back flip without him and carry on off the stage as if it were still going by its self. This made it look like that he went up the ramp on the bmx, done half of a back flip and then came off in the air and landed on the floor as the bmx carried on going without him. i then created a speech bubble by using the oval tool, Line tool and text tool. I done this by making an oval filled with white and the made a tail coming from the oval by using two straight lines. I then curved the lines of the tail and made sure that the whole area inside this speech bubble shape was white. I then added the word OUCH!! to it with the text tool. Once i had made the speech bubble i placed it onto the scene in which the bmxer comes off of his bmx. I placed it in the frame which the bike was not visible and where the bmxer was lying on the floor. I then made this scene stop by using the code snippets and action script. i then added my button onto the last frame so it was possible to go to the next scene.

With my next scene i placed a picture of a dirt jump as my background. Again i added a key frame further on in the time line so the background will stay for a long period. I then placed the image of just the bmx on a new layer at the beginning of the background image. I the made several more key frames across the time line until it was in line with the background images key frame. I then, at each key frame on the bmx layer moved the bmx in to a different place until it had complete the jump and gone off screen. I the added a classic tween to all of the key frames in the bmx layer in this scene so it looked like it was moving.

Finally for my last scene i got an image of a finish line as my back ground and used the same method as in the previous scene so that my background for it would stay for a certain amount of time. I then got the same image of the bmx which was in the previous scene and made it go from the left hand stage of the stage to the right hand side. I Done this by placing a key frame at the end of the time line above where the end of the backgrounds key frame is. I then added a classic tween so it would move in each key frame in-between. After that i modified the speech bubble that i used previously by changing the text inside this and added it to my last couple of frames in this scene.

Rhino / Cheetah Tutorial

I have made this in Photoshop. It is a rhino with a leopard skin placed over the top of it. I done this by putting the picture of the leopard over the picture of the rhino. after that I decreased the opacity of the leopard and then entered liquify mode. In liquify I stretched the skin of the leopard, as good as I can without making it look really stretched, over the shape of the rhino.

After spending time in liquify mode I exited that then added a mask to the leopard layer and selected the brush tool, making sure the colour selected was black, then went around the outline of the rhino getting rid of parts of the leopard skin that I did not need. I also done this around the rest of the picture to get rid of the leopard pictures background.

After completing this stage I used the clone stamp tool to to fill in the rhinos last leg with the leopard skin pattern. I then put a dark light effect  on the leopard skin to make it really stand out.

Hippo / Lizard tutorial

here i have created a lizard with a hippos head on it. To do this I started off by dragging a picture of a hippos head onto a picture of the lizard. I then free transformed the hippos head to line it up with the lizards neck. After doing that I then went on to changing the colour of the hippos head to match the lizard. I then added a layer mask on top of the layer of the hippo and selected the brush tool and blended in the lizard body to the hippos head.

After this made the inside of the hippos mouth pink again by using a quick mask and the brush tool. Once it was pink I then used the same method to get the colour of his eye back as well as the inside of his ear. Finally on this part I changed the colour levels of the image to make it look better.

After doing all of this I went on to putting a blue layer in the background to make a contrast.

Typography Image Manipulation

With this image I took a picture of myself and opened it up in Photoshop. I the put a dry brush effect on to it and edited the options with it to make it a simple looking image. After this I used the magic wand tool to select a certain area. On a new layer with this area selected I right clicked and chose 'make work path' to make this area selected have a black line as the outline. With this I chose the text tool and start typing the word sleep around the outline. I done the same process with several parts of the picture until my face had been outlined by the word sleep.

shatter text

i created this image in Photoshop. I started by making a black backround with a hieght of 4 inches and a width of 8 inches. I then created a new layer and used the text tool to type my name. With this i changed the size of the text and the font as well. I then edited this text by using the bevel and emboss effect. This gave a silver chrome look once i had finished playing around with these settings. I then selected the polygonal lasso tool and made several triangle shapes over the text and moved each triangle away slightly to create a shattered effect on the text.

After the text was done i created a new layer, whiched was placed inbetween the text layer and the background, and used the lasso tool to create a circular shape. I then put a cloud effect on this and then added a radial blur to make it look like an explosion. Once that was made i created a new layer which was a explosion for the text. I then moved this explosion slighly to the left and merged this layer to the main explosion layer. Then with the explosion and text explosion layer i chose the hue/saturation tool and adjusted the settings to make the explosion green. Once i had made the explosion i created a little shadow behind the text by using the stroke and drop shadow options on the text layer. I then moved this shadow and turned the opacity down aas well.
